Each one features different amenities, including one with a fitness center and together they comfortably sleep 20.
It took my late husband and I a few years of searching to find our Georgian Bay paradise. We were looking for a private island large enough to host our family and friends, yet with living and play areas that retained the warmth and feeling of true home.
While there are many private islands on Georgian Bay, most are located in areas well-suited to people looking to regularly host and socialize with the many people living around them. We preferred to find an island getaway far from crowds, secluded from neighbors and noise—a place where one could more closely holiday amongst nature, allowing our children to truly appreciate how precious our natural world is. We discovered that the area of Northern Georgian Bay offered the combination of raw natural beauty, seclusion and privacy we desired, and yet was only around an hour and 15 minutes by float-plane from the Toronto Island Airport, 2.5 hour drive from Toronto International Airport, or a 1.5 hour drive from Sudbury Airport.
When we discovered Bigwood Island, we instantly fell in love with its charm and natural beauty. The island’s main lodge was originally built in the booming lumber and coal industry years of the early 1900s as a getaway for the president of the area lumber company, Graves, Bigwood & Company.
Our family and children spent 30 years (summer months, as well as Christmas escapades) on the island, enjoying the un-congested area waters, swimming, canoeing, sailing, fishing and wreck diving; making picnic or overnight canoe and boat trips to the Bustard Islands, Killarney and the Cloche Mountain area. The water around Bigwood Island is pristine and perfect for swimming, boating and observing the plentiful animal wildlife. Picking the plentiful wild berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries) on the island to make crumbles, having al fresco lunches and dinners on the wraparound porch of the main lodge, BBQs at the point of the island with views of the open bay and the Cloche Mountains, enjoying gorgeous sunsets and spending endless nights star-gazing, and generally just making memories that our family cherishes and will never forget.
We winterized 2 of the cabins on the island to be able to come during the winter and spend a true northern Christmas in the snow and cold. Exploring the island and surrounding areas with ski doos, ice skating, cross country skiing, reading books around the beautiful stone fireplaces, playing billiards, taking long walking around the island and observing the wildlife were some of our favorite winter activities.
Bigwood Island is magical. It is a true paradise to experience the beauty of the nature and the warmth of an inviting family home with just enough seclusion while still offering the comforts and amenities for today’s world.
